At its annual planning session in 2023, our Board of Directors made Food Security the impact focus of its three year strategic plan. This decision was made in response to the Community Foundation’s recognition of food insecurity as an entrenched and ever-growing challenge in our region.
Since that time, the Community Foundation has been engaged in efforts to enhance food security and help create a more resilient, sustainable and equitable food system in the South Okanagan Similkameen.
On September 20th 2024, we hosted a day-long summit which gathered a broad cross section of individuals and organizations involved in food security to connect and share ideas. Attendees were provided with this background report as a starting point for their conversations:
The following slide deck outlines the day’s events:
The day’s discussion and reflection was gathered into a summary report which will help inform future community conversations and the Community Foundation’s ongoing food security work:
A follow-up meeting to the summit has been scheduled for November 29th, and outcomes will be shared here when they are available. We will also add to this page with updates on our work in food security and food systems change as they occur.
